Common questions
- What is the difference between HSN and SAC codes?
- HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods. SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services. Both are 6 or 8-digit codes notified by CBIC and used on every GST invoice to identify what is being supplied and at what rate.
- How many digits should the HSN code be on my invoice?
- Aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore: 4-digit HSN for B2B (optional for B2C). Above ₹5 crore: 6-digit HSN for all invoices. Exports and certain notified goods may require 8 digits.
- How do I find the right HSN for my product?
- Type a keyword (e.g. "soap", "mobile phone"), the chapter number, or any partial code into the search. The lookup matches against the CBIC notified description and returns the code with the applicable GST rate.
- Is the HSN code mandatory on a GST invoice?
- Yes. Since 1 April 2021, HSN/SAC is mandatory on tax invoices for all registered taxpayers: 4 digits for aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore and 6 digits above ₹5 crore.
- What happens if I use the wrong HSN code?
- A wrong HSN can produce an incorrect GST rate, cause ITC mismatches for your buyer, and attract a penalty of up to ₹50,000 (₹25,000 CGST + ₹25,000 SGST) under Section 125 for incorrect classification.
- What is the difference between a 6-digit and an 8-digit HSN code?
- The 6-digit code is the global Harmonized System level. India adds two more digits (8-digit) for finer classification. Exports and certain notified products require the full 8-digit code.
