Common questions

What are the current GST slabs in India?
The standard GST rate slabs are 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. The 28% slab additionally attracts a compensation cess on sin and luxury goods like tobacco, aerated drinks and motor vehicles. Most goods and services fall in the 5%, 12% or 18% bracket.
When does GST split into CGST + SGST vs IGST?
For intra-state supplies (supplier and recipient in the same state), the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. For inter-state supplies, the entire GST is charged as IGST. The calculator detects this automatically when you select supplier and recipient states.
What is the difference between inclusive and exclusive GST?
Exclusive (or "tax-extra") means the price you enter does NOT include GST, so the tax is added on top. Inclusive means the price already contains GST and we reverse-engineer the base amount and tax component. The calculator toggles between both.
Does this work offline?
Yes. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, with no signup and no internet required after the first load. Your inputs are never sent to a server.
How do I calculate GST backwards from a total amount?
To extract GST from a tax-inclusive total, divide the total by (1 + rate/100) to get the taxable value, then subtract it for the tax. Example: ₹1,180 at 18% gives a taxable value of ₹1,000 and GST of ₹180. The calculator does this automatically in inclusive mode.
What GST rate applies to my product or service?
Most goods and services fall under 5%, 12% or 18%. Essentials are often 0% or 5%, standard items 12% or 18%, and luxury or sin goods attract 28% plus cess. Use the HSN/SAC lookup to confirm the exact notified rate for your item.
Is GST charged before or after a discount?
GST is charged on the transaction value after any discount shown on the invoice, as long as the discount is agreed before or at the time of supply. A post-supply discount needs a credit note to reduce the GST.
